The ornamental crab apple stretched her branches toward the sky and shook in the breeze as if to say, “See how beautiful my new leaves are, Lord?”

We love to walk somewhere beautiful on Sundays, and today, everywhere was beautiful! With the temperature topping 75 degrees, and no rain in sight, we roamed through the woods in Lewis Emery Park near Hillsdale, MI, taking in the sights and sounds of God’s creation.

Mama goose was sitting on her nest, carefully watching lest we get too close!

As we strolled by the water, we found that we were not the only ones out for a walk today.

This geese couple found their marital troubles faded in the sunshine.

After a while we got off the paved path and struck off into the woods. There we found very few frogs or toads (surprise–usually they line the paths and jump into the stream when we get close). But we did find this beautiful little song sparrow, and through she was shy, she remained on the path for quite a while.

If she hadn’t moved we would never have seen her. Isn’t her camouflage beautiful? At first I thought she was an American Tree Sparrow, but the gray stripe over her eye and her reddish crown gave her away. How I wished she would have sung, but she might have been all tired out from this morning’s cantata.

We saw a lot of different birds: robins, red-winged blackbirds, some sweet little wrens, black-capped chickadees, downy woodpeckers, and a strange fellow I can’t identify. (Well, he didn’t think he was strange, but he seemed to believe that I was strange, and soon flew off to tell his bird friends about me. Can you imagine?)

We also saw lots of wildflowers!

Tony identified these bright fellows for me. He said they are called “buttercup.” And I answered, “As You Wish.”

Further on near the waterfall, we saw THIS!

Psychomorphis Epimenis lay in wait on the path. She posed for several seconds after we chased her all over, trying to get a picture. This is a first sighting for us of this moth! They are here in Michigan in April through June, and they lay their eggs on the grape, hence the common name, Grapevine Epimenis. Or you can just call her “pretty.” It’s fine with me.

Last, but certainly not least, we found the lazy ‘ol moon in the sky, reclining for his mid-afternoon nap.

See how he snuggles down into his blue pillow? I can almost hear him: “Ahhh!” Do you see a little smile on his dear face? Maybe it’s just the poet in me.

What a beautiful world our Lord has made, shown off to perfection in the springtime! I praise Him for this wonderful day.
