You were made for such a time as this!

Today I was working outside, and it was dirty work, under the car. Something caught Beau’s eye when he came to check on me, and he pointed out a strange-looking bug in the shadows on the tire.

This little guy was hiding in the dark behind my tire.

He moved slowly into view, his one foot showing up first, and then walked, very slowly, right onto Beau’s outstretched screwdriver, as if rightly understanding it as help.

Beau rescued him from the cold, dark place where he had been hiding and held him up so that we could both see him in the sunlight. Unusually pinky-peach and green, his color intrigued me. He exactly matched the colors of the maple tree under which we were sitting.

See those beautiful colors? He shows up like a little jewel on the ground, but when he’s among the fallen maple leaves, he is much harder to find. I know, because I asked Beau to find him again for a better picture, but he couldn’t!

I called in the expert, and Tony found it was very similar to Zelus Luridis, an assassin bug nymph. Yes, assassin bug means it eats other bugs; this specimen is very slow-moving, and relies on the fact that it can blend in and sneak up on its prey.

The words floated into my mind, words I’ve been hearing a lot, lately:”You were made for such a time as this.”

Since it’s late October, the cold is surely on the way. This little bug probably won’t live long, but for now, on this lovely, 75 degree day, he is in the perfect environment. If it weren’t for his coloring, I might have believed that he was somehow born late, a throwback from an earlier mid-summer hatching.

This isn’t a maple leaf; I think it’s a mulberry. But the leaves he was walking in were just the same colors as on his little body.
He was made for such a time as this!

But no, he was designed to be under the maple tree during the brief few weeks while the leaves are peachy-pink and green. He is perfectly suited for right now. He was designed for it, obviously.

And so were you!

“. . .who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14
