My Heart Longs For Little Things

Today I was thinking, as I looked out at this beautiful late-winter day, about how many of the things I care about are so small. I mean literally tiny.

We were riding in the car, and a box elder bug crawled on my dad’s window. He put his big boxy finger close to it as if he would pet it, and without touching it, pointed it out. Then he looked back out the windshield, content to ride with his little acquaintance nearby.

My Dad had a box elder bug riding “shotgun.”

He cared about the little bug. And I did, too. Later, I wondered where he went. He wasn’t on the window that I could see, and so I began to fret on his behalf. Did he fall on the floor? Had he crawled into the air vent? Was he down at the base of the windshield, unable to get out?

I got a moment of perspective, and shook my head at myself. I spoke a prayer to God: “Isn’t it funny, Lord, how my heart longs after little things?”

I imagined God listening to me, looking down at me, while I was riding in the car. He saw me fretting about a bug, but what am I to the God who made the sun? Who am I among all the people in the world? How small I must be to God, and yet He heard my prayer, where I mocked my own self for caring for a box elder bug.

I praise God that he made me to be concerned about the little things of this world, in the same way He is concerned about me!! For He LOVES me! He notices when I drop a tear, or lose my keys. He cares when I feel slighted. He sees what happens behind my back, and he keeps track. He LOVES His children, and I am so thankful he watches me, and His heart longs for this little one.

This is Tilly, my sweet cat. My heart longs for Tilly more than I care to admit! He is soaking up warmth from the pellet stove here.

He loves us so much. He loves you!! Don’t forget that. As you go about your day, revel in His love!

Flowers are little things, but how they brighten the table!

And it’s OK to long for the little things around you, to care for small things. It’s natural for us to love those little things, because our Father does the same thing!
