A Walk In The Park

Our Sunday practice is to attend services, brunch with family, then take a (long) walk in the afternoon in a wild place. Our “wild place” has become a bit routine, as we tend to drift again and again to our beloved Lewis Emery Park. (As the weather warms up, we might change that!) Yesterday was warmer, but cloudy, so the only sky picture I will share is the beautiful “flower” moon from Saturday night.

I never get tired of looking at the moon! This is the full “Flower Moon” of April.

We found that the woods are waking up!

At the first fabulous dandelion of the spring season,
I am reminded that everything is all right!

We walked along the stream, and found that a lot of the undergrowth and a large chunk of the woods has been removed. And while we miss the old landscape, there are new opportunities for things to grow in the sunlight, so we are eager to see what happens. But on the shady side, we found wildflowers!

There was a carpet of flowers down the whole hillside!
Tony identified this as “bloodroot.”
A single bloodroot flower emerging from the soil. See how the leaf wraps the stem? And see the rosy new ones coming on the lower right?

Park security was there, of course, and on high alert. We soon found out why.

Park Security, sounding the alarm!

Alone in the weeds, we found this goose:

She didn’t move even when we got closer.
It’s weary, patient work to sit on a nest and wait. Those feathers are ones she has plucked from her own breast to keep the eggs warm. The expression in her eyes! We stayed away and gave her room to relax.
This swan didn’t care, though. He was just checking his look and posing.
The red-winged blackbirds arrived weeks ago, and were guarding their territory and telling the news to each other. Listen how many there were!
I could hear this guy’s single note, but it took a while to see him. This is a grackle. See his yellow-ringed eye?
Back home in the evening, I tried to get a picture of the just-past-full moon and caught this. A “happy accident!”
